Description

What is it?

A fructose intolerance breath test is a non-invasive test used to diagnose fructose malabsorption, a condition where the body has difficulty absorbing fructose, a type of sugar found in fruits, some vegetables, and sweetened foods.

Here's how a fructose intolerance breath test works:

  1. Baseline Breath Sample: You'll blow into a machine or a special balloon to collect a breath sample. This establishes your baseline hydrogen levels.

  2. Fructose Drink: You'll then be given a drink containing a specific amount of fructose.

  3. Breath Samples: After consuming the drink, you'll provide additional breath samples at regular intervals, typically over two to three hours.

  4. Hydrogen Measurement: The breath samples are analyzed for the presence of hydrogen gas. Normally, little to no hydrogen is produced in the small intestine. However, if you have fructose malabsorption, bacteria in your large intestine will ferment the unabsorbed fructose, producing hydrogen gas, which is then released in your breath.
