Homocysteine (Quantitative)
A homocysteine test measures the amount of homocysteine in a sample of your blood. Homocysteine is an amino acid. Amino acids are molecules that your body uses to make proteins.
Having a high homocysteine level could indicate different things: - You might not be getting enough vitamin B12 or folic acid in your diet. - There's a possibility of having homocystinuria, but further testing is needed for a proper diagnosis. - You could have a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, or other blood vessel disorders. - Other conditions like osteoporosis, chronic kidney disease, hypothyroidism, or Alzheimer's disease could also cause elevated homocysteine levels. Remember, high levels don't always mean you need treatment. Factors like age, sex, and smoking can affect your results.
