Although it might feel as though LED light therapy is a new offering in the skincare world, it has actually been growing in popularity since 2019 and the effects of LED lights on our skin and tissues has been studied for much longer.

But if you’re new to the concept of LED light therapy and are considering visiting a skin rejuvenation clinic to try it out, there are a few elements it’s important to understand.

What conditions does LED light therapy treat?

First, it’s important to know if what you want to achieve with a skincare treatment is possible using LED light therapy. The good news is that this kind of treatment can help with a variety of conditions.

These include rosacea, wrinkles, eczema and mild to moderate acne. However, it’s important that you talk to your therapist before you get started to ensure you understand the limitations of the treatment as well as how it could work for your skin.

Is there more than one type of LED light therapy?

Yes. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach here. Different wavelengths of light can treat different conditions.

There are three types of LED light therapy that we commonly offer:

  • Red light therapy

This is the best option if your goal is skin rejuvenation as the red light stimulates collagen production which can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on your complexion.

  • Blue light therapy

If your goal is to treat acne, this is the LED wavelength to go for. This is because the blue light targets what are known as your sebaceous glands – the tiny glands in your skin that produce oil known as sebum.

Overproduction of sebum is often linked to acne outbreaks, but it’s thought the blue light can make your sebaceous glands less active and therefore lead to less oil being produced by your skin.

  • Near-infrared light therapy

This type of LED light therapy is used to calm inflammation in your skin and to support tissue repair. Like red light therapy, it can stimulate collagen production and therefore help reduce the signs of aging on your skin.

Does LED light therapy hurt?

No! It’s actually a very relaxing procedure. When you book an appointment for LED light therapy, you’ll start by having a consultation to discuss your skin and what you’d like to get out of the treatment.

This will allow our professionals to tailor the treatment to suit you. Once you’ve had your consultation, your skin will be cleansed to ensure it is ready for optimal light penetration.

Your practitioner will help you get comfortable and will place the LED light therapy device over your face – there will be space between your face and the device.

Then all you need to do is lie back and relax for 30 minutes while the LED light does its work. You will feel some warmth on your face during this time, but it is pleasant and soothing. Another benefit to LED light therapy is that there is no downtime after the treatment.
