A gastrointestinal (GI) panel, also known as a stool PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test, is a comprehensive test used to identify the cause of infectious diarrhoea. It analyses a stool sample to detect the genetic material (DNA or RNA) of various pathogens, including:

  • Bacteria, such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli, and Shigella

  • Viruses, such as rotavirus, norovirus, and adenovirus

  • Parasites, such as Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium

Why is a Gastrointestinal Panel (Stool PCR) Performed?

A GI panel may be ordered if you are experiencing symptoms of GI infection, such as:

  • Diarrhoea (watery stools)

  • Abdominal cramps

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Fever

  • Blood or mucus in the stool

The test can help your doctor determine the specific cause of your infection and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
