Description
What is it?
A routine STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) screen with Hepatitis B typically involves blood tests to check for both infections. Here's a breakdown of what you might expect:
Tests Included:
Hepatitis B Tests:
Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg): This test detects the presence of the Hepatitis B virus on the surface of infected liver cells. A positive HBsAg indicates current or recent infection.
Hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb): This test detects antibodies your body produces in response to a Hepatitis B infection. A positive HBsAb can indicate:
Past infection with and recovery from Hepatitis B (immunity)
Vaccination against Hepatitis B (immunity)
Hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb): This test detects antibodies against the core of the Hepatitis B virus.
A positive HBcAb with a negative HBsAg usually indicates a past infection and immunity.
A positive HBcAb with a positive HBsAg suggests chronic infection.
Syphilis Blood Test (Optional): While not always included in a routine STI screen, some doctors may recommend a syphilis test alongside Hepatitis B depending on your risk factors and sexual practices. This would typically involve the two-step process mentioned previously:
Non-treponemal test (e.g., RPR or VDRL)
Treponemal test (e.g., FTA-ABS) if the non-treponemal test is positive.
