Antibiotics Allergy Profile

Description

Antibiotic allergy tests are a type of assessment used to identify whether your immune system reacts abnormally to certain antibiotics. An antibiotic allergy occurs when your immune system mistakenly identifies a medication as harmful and produces antibodies in response.

An antibiotic allergy is different from antibiotic intolerance or side effects. An allergy involves the immune system and can be serious, whereas intolerance usually causes milder symptoms such as nausea or stomach upset and is not immune-mediated.

Symptoms of an antibiotic allergy can develop quickly after taking the medication and may include:

  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Wheezing

  • Skin rash, hives, or itching

  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea

  • Dizziness or fainting

Severe antibiotic allergies can lead to anaphylaxis, which is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.
