Nut Allergy Profile

Description

This blood test measures Total IgE alongside specific IgE antibodies to a comprehensive range of nuts and seeds. It can help identify sensitisation to individual allergens where a nut or seed allergy is suspected.

The test includes specific IgE testing for:

  • Almond

  • Brazil nut

  • Cashew nut

  • Chestnut

  • Coconut

  • Hazelnut

  • Macadamia nut

  • Peanut

  • Pecan nut

  • Pine nut (pignoles)

  • Pistachio

  • Sesame seed

  • Walnut

Total IgE is also measured to provide an overall indication of allergic antibody activity.

This test may be useful for people who have experienced symptoms such as itching, hives, swelling, digestive symptoms, wheezing or other reactions after eating nuts or seeds. Why book this test?

Nut and seed allergies can cause symptoms ranging from mild itching and digestive discomfort to hives, swelling or breathing symptoms. Because many nuts are eaten together or included as hidden ingredients in foods, it can sometimes be difficult to work out which specific allergen may be responsible.

This test allows you to check multiple individual nuts and seeds from one blood sample, giving you a clearer picture than testing only one suspected food at a time.

It may be particularly useful if you:

  • Have experienced symptoms after eating nuts, seeds or foods containing them

  • Are unsure which particular nut or seed may be causing your symptoms

  • Have reacted to mixed nuts or foods containing several ingredients

  • Want to investigate possible nut or sesame sensitisation

  • Have been avoiding several nuts and would like more targeted information

  • Want objective blood-test information to discuss with your GP or allergy specialist

  • What does the test measure?

The laboratory measures specific IgE antibodies against each allergen individually, alongside Total IgE.

This means your report can show whether sensitisation is present to particular nuts or seeds rather than giving only a general allergy marker.

One blood test. Multiple allergens. More targeted answers.

Instead of guessing which nut or seed may be responsible, this panel provides a convenient way to investigate a broad range of common nut and seed allergens at the same time.

Important: A positive specific IgE result indicates sensitisation and does not on its own confirm a clinical food allergy. Results should always be considered alongside your symptoms and medical history. If you have experienced a severe allergic reaction or breathing difficulties, you should seek appropriate medical assessment.
