Otitis Externa
Otitis externa is an inflammatory condition of the external ear canal, often occurring when a secondary infection is suspected. We can assess and treat adults and children aged 2 years and over under this service.
Symptoms usually develop rapidly within 48 hours and include:
Ear pain and tenderness of the tragus and/or pinna, which can often be severe and accompanied by jaw pain.
Itchiness of the ear canal.
Ear discharge.
Hearing loss is caused by the ear canal becoming occluded.
Signs that you or your child (aged 2 or older) may have otitis externa include:
A red and swollen (oedematous) ear canal.
Tenderness when touching the outer ear.
Debris and discharge in the ear canal contributing to swelling.
Tender and swollen lymph nodes around the ear area
Treatment
Start with the basics: You can take everyday painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen to help with the pain. It is also very important to keep your ears clean and dry.
Prescription treatments: If your symptoms are painful and the simple steps above haven't helped, our pharmacists can check your ears. They may be able to prescribe a stronger ear spray to clear up the infection.
Helpful Reminder: While treating the infection, please remember to stay out of the water and avoid swimming for at least 7 to 10 days so your ear can heal.
Upon booking an appointment you are required to fill out the form which will be included in the confirmation email (in the form of a link).
This appointment does not guarantee you will be prescribed medication, this is dependent on the pharmacists opinion as to the whether it is suitable.
